The Silmarillion
Edited by Christopher Tolkien
"And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he himself hath not imagined." - Eru Ilúvatar |
A history of the creation of Arda (the World) and the development of Middle-Earth and it's peoples, told through short vignette-like chapters. A fight between good and evil arises. Elves, Men, and Dwarves appear in Middle-Earth and the three cultures learn to defend themselves from the evil, while adapting to the land and forming allies. At the center of the story are the Silmarils, three jewels created by an Elven craftsman, and by which many characters' fates are bound.
